Autism

What is Autism?

Research indicates that about 1% of children in Australia are Autistic. Like all children, every child with Autism is unique, however there are core symptoms characterised by differences in behaviour, social interaction, communication and sensory processing. Every person is affected differently, and whilst some people with Autism also have an intellectual impairment or disability, some people have average or above-average intelligence. People with Autism often experience additional challenges and problems like ADHD, anxiety and depression are particularly common.

What Causes Autism ?

Whilst there is currently no single known cause of Autism recent research indicates strong genetic links. It is generally accepted that Autism is caused by changes in the normal structure and function of the brain. Brain scans that look at how the brain is working, such as QEEG, can help to localise the areas of the brain that are not working optimally. This important information can be used to help guide advice and to develop personalised therapy programmes.

Drug-Free Therapy For Autism

Perth Brain Centre focuses on providing drug-free, evidence-based, brain-based therapies for Autism. Research shows that that the earlier someone with Autism starts care the better the long-term results. Scientists think that this is because younger brains are more “plastic” and can change more easily, a term described as “neuroplasticity.” Therapy programmes for people with Autism are different for everyone and often involves a co-ordinated approach involving care from a range of healthcare professions such as Paediatricians, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists.

There is no “one size fits all” approach, and we believe that everyone should be able to make an informed choice based upon the range of therapies now available. Perth Brain Centre provides drug-free and evidence-based therapies for children and adults with Autism (as well as helping some of the additional challenges that are common such as ADHD, anxiety and depression) including Neurofeedback Therapy and Biofeedback Training, as well as offering targeted lifestyle advice.
